Common Questions

Questions EV taxi drivers actually ask

Real answers based on experience running a Tesla Model 3 as a private hire vehicle in Wiltshire.

How much does it really cost per mile in an electric taxi?
Based on early Tesla Model 3 data: charging at home overnight (7p/kWh) costs around 3.8p per mile. Using public rapid chargers (40-50p/kWh) pushes this to 12-15p. A realistic blended average with mixed charging is 8-10p per mile.
What is the HMRC mileage rate for electric cars in 2026?
HMRC Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) rates for 2026 are 45p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles, and 25p per mile after that. These rates apply to electric cars the same as petrol and diesel.
Is EV really cheaper than petrol for taxi work?
Yes — significantly. A petrol car at 40 MPG costs around 17-18p per mile at current fuel prices. An EV charged at home costs 3-4p. Even with a mix of home and public charging you are typically 60-70% cheaper per mile.
Do I need to log mileage differently as an EV driver for HMRC?
No — HMRC mileage logging requirements are the same for EV and petrol. You need: date, start and end odometer reading, destination, and business purpose. The EVDriver App handles all of this automatically and calculates your claim using the correct rates.
What EV works best for school run contracts?
For school runs the Tesla Model 3 works well — predictable short distances mean you can charge overnight and run all week without touching a public charger. Charging costs are around £8-9 per week for a typical school run route.
How do I calculate my EV charging cost per mile?
Formula: (Total £ charged ÷ kWh added) × kWh per mile = cost per mile. Example: you pay £12 for 40 kWh (30p/kWh). Your car uses 0.28 kWh/mile. Cost = 30p × 0.28 = 8.4p per mile. Use the free Cost Per Mile Calculator at the top of this page.

Personal · Pawel S.

Why I Switched to an EV

My decision to switch to an EV was mainly about economics. As a private hire driver, I do a lot of miles every year, so fuel costs make a huge difference. Charging at home is much cheaper than buying petrol or diesel, especially on an EV tariff.

I also like the fact that there is much less maintenance. No oil changes, no fuel filters, fewer moving parts, and generally less that can go wrong. And when your car is your business, reliability matters — EVs have a much simpler design compared to traditional cars, which means fewer components that can fail.

I've also always been interested in technology. EVs feel like the future, and I enjoy using new technology every day rather than driving a car designed around an engine.

And if I'm being completely honest, I've wanted a Tesla ever since I first saw the original Tesla Roadster. Back then it felt like something from the future. Owning one was a dream for many years, so being able to drive a Tesla every day while also saving money on running costs was an easy decision for me.
